Within the last 96 hours, Urban Ventures has converted our gymnasium into a food distribution center (all through donations), developed a volunteer Community Crew of over 3,000 people, and established a fund to support the rebuilding of small businesses devastated by the destruction and violence in our community. Without your support, none of this would be possible.
Today, I write with one simple message: Please do whatever you can to keep the help coming!
We truly need every dollar. Every book. Every bag of groceries you can muster. In fact, the community need is so great that we anticipate running out of supplies as soon as tomorrow unless YOU––our generous supporters––keep up the extraordinary response.
Let me repeat that: we will run out of supplies as soon as tomorrow without more help.
To recap again, here’s what you can do:
FOOD & ESSENTIAL ITEMS: Nearly all of the markets/grocery stores in the area are closed. Food scarcity is now becoming acute. Demand for groceries and essential items is sky-high. Fortunately, our emergency food relief operation is up and running smoothly, distributing thousands of meals per day (as long as we continue to have an inflow of donated items to distribute)
We are asking you to consider purchasing food from this downloadable shopping list, and drop off items at Urban Ventures' north doors (click for directions) either tomorrow 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., or next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Address: Urban Ventures' Colin Powell Center, 2924 4th Ave. S., Minneapolis, 55408
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will retrieve the groceries from your vehicle.
We expect this need to continue for several weeks, but we will provide further updates next week. Questions? Call 612-638-1000.
KIDS: Our family’s LOVE the toys, books, and activities you have given so far–but we have been limiting the numbers we distribute so we don’t run out! Please continue to buy items such as LEGOS, art supplies, pretend play items, Play-Doh, yard activities, etc. School is out next week; we will immediately begin to offer virtual classes. Let's support both parents and kids by giving our young people something to do!
If you are purchasing books, please consider buying titles that feature diverse protagonists, as kids relate most to characters who look like them. Bonus points for Spanish- or Somali-language books as well as bilingual books.
Drop off kids' items at the same times/location as food & essential items, listed above.
Due to COVID-19 precautions, please only provide new items. At drop off, we will retrieve kids' items from your vehicle.
MAKE A FINANCIAL DONATION: Accompanying your food/books/children’s activity items with a financial donation will help us provide consistent support to struggling families throughout the long rebuilding process.
Donations will also build up our fund to help our small business owners get back in business and revitalize the local economy. Unique among the various relief efforts in the area, Urban Ventures will engage project teams made up of volunteers and staff (along with financial resources) to rebuild and re-open these businesses. We anticipate this process––along with the first round of emergency disbursements––will begin as soon as next week.
Thank you for supporting our community by giving so generously of your time, talents, and treasure. We are truly blessed to have you as a partner working alongside us.
