Canticum
A large number of people from Christiania and surrounding communities enjoyed this concert on June, 23rd.
Canticum is a 37-voice gospel choir from small communities in the province of Skane, in southern Sweden.
The Choir began in the 1950's when a group of young women started to sing together. After a while they welcomed young men into the choir and the choir grew bigger and bigger and they started to gather people from a larger area. Today the choir consists of youth and young adults from ages 16-30. The choir, which practices bi-monthly, presents concerts in their area of Sweden besides visits to Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
Jesus is the reason the choir started and reason they still together. They sing about the great things the Lord has done for us and they want more people to know about the life Jesus has in store for them. The fellowship with other young Christians is also an important part of their group because some in the choir go to schools where they are the only Christians around. The choir is directed by Thomas Suki who as a child, was born in Ethiopia and was adopted by a Swedish couple while serving in Ethiopia.
Canticum's 3-week tour to the US this year was arranged by Dave Anderson, a worker in lay ministry in the Lutheran Church. Any income from the concerts, after expenses, will benefit Shepherd's Canyon Retreat, Inc. in Phonenix, AZ. For more information on this organization look up www.ShepherdsCanyonRetreat.org.
